Skin care is a complex topic especially when it is associated with anti-aging. A lot has been said and written on what to eat, apply, and avoid, in order to ensure younger looking and radiant skin. Many of these are true while others are just myth. Knowing about these myths will help you choose the right way towards younger and glowing skin.

Listed below are 7 such myths you must stop believing:

    1. It is all in the Genes

No. Aging process of your skin does not depend on the way your mom looked. Although genes play an important role in how your skin looks, environmental factors and lifestyle are crucial factors. You may have inherited your mom’s genes but a lifestyle different from her will affect your skin differently.

    1. Moisturize Regularly to Keep Face Wrinkle Free

No. Moisturizers are simply meant to seal in moisture. It will have very less effect on aging. Long term solution to aging is applying specific products meant to fight those lines off. Speak to a renowned dermatologist for the same.

    1. Put a Lot of Retinol on your Face to Keep Wrinkles at Bay

Retinol is one of the most effective ways you can fight wrinkles and fine lines off. However, this does not mean you should slather it generously. Over application of retinol can increase the risk of irritation and you may end up with burnt skin. This rule applies for other anti-aging products too. These products comprises of active ingredients in concentrated doses resulting in increased turnover of skin cell.

    1. Expensive Anti-Aging Products are the Best

This is not true. A higher price tag is no guarantee for brilliant results. Expensive doesn’t necessarily mean your product is genuine or more effective. The idea is to know what works and what doesn’t. Read the list of ingredients mentioned on the package before making an investment. Formulation is what’s going to make you look younger, not the cost. The package should read retinol, pro-retinol, lactic acid or glycolic acid. Use of high-quality ingredients at higher or smaller price will help reduce signs of aging such as fine lines, wrinkles, age spots, pigmentation, and dull skin. The idea is to find the right product regardless of the price they come tagged with.

    1. Once the Results are Seen, You Can Stop Using Anti-Aging Products

This is wrong! The aging process of skin is unstoppable. In fact, your skin ages continuously. Use of anti-aging products will not deter or end that process. The anti-aging products available on the market are designed to manage visible signs of aging. This is possible only for the time period you continue using the products. Once you stop, the signs re-appear. Proper use of right products will keep your skin looking radiant and youthful. Make sure the products you choose are designed and formulated to address issues including sun damage, pollutants, and address free radicals. You should use these products on a regular basis.

    1. Facial Exercises will Make You Look Young

NO! Although a lot has been said and written about facial exercises and their effectiveness in taking years off one’s face, contorting face with these exercises won’t really make a difference. Although a study in the Journal of Dermatological Treatment and its report published in women’s magazine found that an 8-week program performed twice a day involving specific facial exercises improved elasticity and firmness of face, it made no visible difference to wrinkles. Usually dermatologists warn people against performing such exercises. According to these professionals, the process of contorting face can make existing wrinkles worse. Repetitive facial movements can result in more wrinkles. Hence, it is better to avoid such facial movements unless suggested by a dermatologists or skin specialist.

    1. Sunscreens can be Skipped

No. Sunscreens should be a part of anti-aging skin care routine, even on cloudy days. Sun damage can make your skin age faster. It leads to burns, age spots, and dull skin. Hence, it is important to apply sunscreen with at least 15 SPF (Sun Protection Factor) before stepping out of home. Less sun damage means younger looking skin that shows a healthy glow.
