Decoding Myths About Counseling For Children

Starting with a very simple question, “What parents do when their child catches fever?’ They become tense and call for the doctor to seek treatment and medications. But when a child complains that he/she is not feeling good and reluctant to speak about it, what do parents do? Do they really go to a psychiatrist at once? In most cases, the answer is ‘No’. They often don’t feel the need to understand the depth of the problem. Moreover, they try to impose pressure on them. Counselling for children has always been neglected in almost all communities. This is due to some myths that people framed over the years. In this article, such myths will be decoded so parents and teachers can get a clear idea regarding the mental wellness of the children.

A Child With Psychological Disorder Has No Future

A psychological disorder is just like any other physical disorder which can get better with treatment. Often, when a child suffers from some physical disability, immediate treatment proceeds. The same applies to psychological disorders, if treatment is received at the earliest stage, one can get out of it and lead a happy life.

Inefficient/Bad Parenting Leads To Psychological Disorders In A Child

It is true that the environment of a house plays an important role in a child’s life. But in many cases, a child usually has such disorders from birth. Autism is one such disease.

Mental Imbalances In A Child Can Be Managed Through Strength

A growing child is like a budding stem that can easily break if a storm comes. Mental imbalances caused due to depression and anxiety can be fatal. Being a parent or teacher, one shouldn’t ask their children to be strong and cope up with it. It is not easy for a child to do so as they don’t have a lot of experience. Proper counselling for children must be started so that they can properly deal with it.

    Children Become Dependent On Medicines

This is another completely wrong notion regarding psychiatric disorders. Counselling for children at the basic sessions involves understanding the disorder. Medicines are prescribed once the disorders are fully understood. In some cases, psychiatrists do not recommend medicines at all. They, instead, provide therapy sessions. Also, the medicines are prescribed for a period of time, not for a lifetime. So there lies no chance of dependency on it.

Weak Children Tend To Develop Psychological Disorders

This myth is the most baseless among all. The notion that physically weak children are prone to mental health issues cannot be justified. Healthy children also suffer from mental illnesses. Counselling for children tries to eradicate such myths from their minds and helps to cope up with their sudden behavioural changes.

    Waste Of Money And Time

If a child gets some chronic health issue, one never feels that a lot of time and money is wasted over it, but with mental disorders, the notion is completely reciprocal for some odd reasons. Regular sessions with the therapist require both money and time. But it is important for mental wellness as a child benefits from it. He/she becomes more healthy, productive, and focused on life.

These are the most common myths that prevail regarding counselling for children. All are just baseless notions that are imposed upon without proper knowledge. Parents and teachers should pay no heed to such ones. They must take the required step for their child’s betterment. It is important that we discuss the mental well-being of children and adults more openly than considering it a taboo. It will help to decode many more such myths in the process. Both the physical and mental well-being of a child is important for the bright future of a child. Click here to learn more about it.
