Aging is inevitable but frowned upon. It comes with its ups and downs. One of its downsides is various health challenges. As you age, the body immune system becomes weak. But the good thing is that some of the health challenges can be avoided. Most people in Melbourne, Australia start experiencing these challenges when they are middle-aged and beyond. Surprisingly, some of the health problems will still occur even if you exercise regularly and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

    Health Challenges Associated With Aging

Let’s face it, your age poses a health risk to your body. Here are some of the health risks associated with age in Australia.

    • Statistics show that most people who are admitted at a medical facility or die from a flu are aged 60 and above. At this age and beyond, the body’s immune system is weak. Seniors tend to develop flu related complications as well. These complications include pneumonia, heart, and lung complications among others.
    • As you age, your body loses muscles and as such, it’s easier to add more weight. Further, older people in Melbourne, Australia are not very active. This means that similar physical activities you were used to doing while younger will burn fewer calories.
    • Weak bones: There is a high chance you used to hear your grandparents complain about their weak bone structure. Well, it’s brought about by aging. Falls are severe for older people in Australia. Seemingly simple falls can lead to a visit to a medical practitioner.
    • There are more new cancer cases reported in people past the age of 50. In fact, age is one of the biggest predictors of presence of cancer cells in a body. There is no conclusive study on why aged people are prone to cancer. One theory could be that their bodies have been exposed to cancer-causing elements for longer.
    • Depression: Some medical experts dismiss depression in older people as a result of many life setbacks among the aged. However, it could be caused by aging as well.

How to Avoid Health Challenges As You Age

The following are some of the ways you can reduce risks of health challenges as you grow older.

    1. Quit smoking and drink less alcohol. Smoking has been attributed to a myriad of cancers including lung, cervical, mouth and stomach cancers. Similarly, alcohol has been associated with 7 types of cancers.
    2. Maintain a healthy diet and exercise regularly. Your diet should contain enough fruits and vegetable portions, a lot of whole grains, less fat, and red meat. Plus avoid eating food high in salt. Exercising for about 30 minutes in a day will go a long way in reducing health challenges including preventing cancer.

    Regular Medical Checkups

The relevance of this point can’t be stressed further. Your family doctor will keep your body in check regularly. Besides, he has your medical history and is aware of all the predisposing factors you’ve been exposed to and how to manage them successfully.
