It is repeatedly suggested to avoid sugary sweets for preventing cavities. Also, regular brushing and flossing top the list to prevent dental caries. But there are certain cavity fighters which may surprise you. Caledon dentistry has recommended adding certain chewing sugar-free gum helps prevent cavities. Apart from that, there are various other products which are suggested after scientific studies.

Let us find out these products:

    Sugar-Free Gum

In case you have missed brushing or flossing, chewing sugar-free gum can prove helpful. As artificial sweeteners such as Xylitol is proven good for teeth. In comparison to another sweetener, it reduces dental caries. It is a natural substitute and one of the best cavity fighter. Chewing sugar-free gum results in removing acidic foods from the surface of your teeth.  Hence, acid formation at the enamel is prevented. The production rate of salvia in your mouth also improves. All food residue is washed away with it.

Caledon dentistry, however, suggests not to chew gum extensively. This is because chewing gum can affect your jaw joint known as the Temporomandibular Joint. Post meal chewing sugar-free gum is still good for preventing tooth decay. Xylitol in gum or mint form gives a better result. The dosage is three to five times daily for a total of 5 grams per day.

Caledon dentistry also advises parents of healthy children above 5 years to chew sugar-free polyol gum. A polyol is a low-calorie sweetener similar to xylitol. It does not get affected by bacteria and so prevents tooth decay.

    Nonfluoride agents

There is various comprehensive cavity-prevention program suggested wherein use of fluoride is prescribed. However, in addition to this, Caledon dentistry considers applying a mixture of chlorhexidine-thymol varnish to the teeth.  It is mainly for adults and elderly who have a high risk of dental caries.  If used every three months cavities are prevented to develop at the root of the tooth.

Chlorhexidine kills bacteria and prevents plaque formation. It is a prescription based antibiotic mouth rinse which is available in liquid form.

While using Chlorhexidine, below affects are expected:

    • You can observe grey or brown staining of gums, teeth or fillings or crowns. Caledon dentistry helps in removing it.
    • You can find some minute changes in taste.
    • It is advised not to use it within two hours of fluoride. Chlorhexidine is taken in the morning whereas fluoride in the evening.
    • Do not swallow it.

    Candy

Sucking xylitol-containing sugar-free lozenges or hard candy post meals prevent tooth decay among children. Although it is known that candy is the enemy of healthy teeth, sugar-free candy has the potential to prevent tooth decay. These candies do not damage your teeth.
